Is Job Hopping a Negative or a Positive?

November 26, 2014

Across the internet there are dozens of articles outlining the pros and cons of job hopping. All of this contradictory advice makes it difficult to know the truth. Whether good or bad, you should always explain your job history and present your job hopping as a positive. At NextGen, we believe the best way to explain job hopping is to shape it into your “career story”.

Anthropological studies have shown that stories help us give meaning to information, shape our personalities and connect with people. By presenting your career as a story and not unrelated events you will help your future employer better make sense of who you are and your experiences. In his article “Writing Your Work Narrative”, Rex Huppke has this advice:

The core point is to examine what you have done in and around your professional life. Treat those experiences like chapters. Then ask, “How do I put those chapters together in a way that makes sense?”

If you can share your achievements, degrees and work history as a story then you can better highlight the benefits of your varied career for your new employer. A good recruiter can help you make certain your resume, cover letter and interview answers consistently convey your career story.
