All good relationships start with Googling. The same holds for the relationship you start with a recruiter. Obviously you want to watch out for the traditional red flags (we probably don’t need a creepy example here), but more than that you want to find out what clients your recruiter works with and see what sort of expertise they can bring, and see if you have any mutual friends or acquaintances. If you know the industry you’re targeting, it makes sense to use a recruiter with that specialty. If you know a company you’re targeting, even better to know a recruiter who’s worked with that company.
How soon is too soon when it comes to contacting my recruiter
Open lines of communication are great, as long as it doesn’t turn into pestering. There’s a fine line but you probably don’t need to volunteer any clarifying information around your resume or skills, or use that as a ruse to ask your recruiter whether or not you got a job or landed an interview. Your recruiter will tell you immediately when something like that happens.
Social Media Etiquette
Let your recruiter make the first move when it comes to connecting on LinkedIn or friending on Facebook. And like any other relationship, don’t stalk your recruiter from a photo they’re tagged in.
Honesty
Don’t lie to your recruiter about your experience or skills. If you make them look bad, you can expect the same in return — not an outcome you want.
Quick Response
A recruiter lives in an especially time-sensitive world. Things change very quickly. Don’t delay in getting back to him or her.
Keep All Cylinders Firing
Just because your recruiter is on the case doesn’t mean you get to take a vacation from your job hunt. Keep looking around, but let the recruiter know where you’re submitting your resume so there’s no crossover.
