Friends Don’t Let Friends Hire Friends

So you’ve thought what could be cooler than working with someone who’s actually your friend. And we’ll start by saying this can work, and it’s not a terrible idea. But kind of like a friend becoming a roommate, there’s a threshold you cross (this one metaphorical) that you should be prepared for.

The Power Struggle

As a friend you guys might relate in very agreeable mutual fashion on things like what appetizers you should share at the new tapas joint. But in business you might not have the time and luxury to make decisions in such an egalitarian way. If you’re managing the friend, then it’s important you’re both aware of the dynamic change.

A New You Two

When you work with your friend, your relationship is going to change. You have to be open to that and let it go where it needs to go. A lot easier said than done. And remember if this friend doesn’t work out you could be put in a position where you have to fire him or her. We’ve seen this work out fine, but it’s an added stress to an already stressful situation.

Meritocracy

Finally, for the rest of your office you have to make sure everyone knows you operate in a meritocracy and the fact that someone is your friend has no bearing on promotions, opportunities, etc. Sometimes people will even overcompensate for this and be afraid to show to much deference to a friend at work. It complicates the situation but that doesn’t mean it can’t be dealt with, just be prepared.

So go ahead and hire that pal if you really think they can move the business forward. Just know that things are gonna get a little complicated, but with a little preparation it can go smoothly.
