Four Job Search Refreshers

Here are the four big things you have to do right to get back in the swing of your job search.

1. Let Everyone Know.

Everyone! It might feel like you sound like a broken record because you are telling everyone early and often about how you’re currently in the market for a new job. But everyone needs to know and they need to be reminded. Many will help if they can, they may even get a little hiring bonus if they do, so let em all know. Early and often. Again and again. You get the point.

2. Know the Language.

We all roll our eyes at businesspeak, but the reality is you have to know it and how it relates to the fields you’re trying to get purchase in. You also have to know the software and platforms that people are using. This all changes fast, so you may need to catch up. Newsletters, Twitter and LinkedIn posts can help tune you up to the lingua franca. Knowledge is power.

3. Consider Freelance.

Maybe think of it as a minor league assignment. A way to dip the toe before taking the plunge. A contract job, even one that doesn’t seem ideal can stir different things inside you that help you know what you really like doing and where your interests might have moved to. Think of it as a way to gain a little self awareness and maybe a little bank too. Never hurts.

4. Persistence.

You have to do something every day when you’re hunting for a new job. Even if it’s something small. You need to be persistent and keep taking swings with your axe at that dream job. Ok, not the best analogy, but the point is you can’t let things slip into inaction. Once they slip too far you’ll lose them and veer off course. Stay the course.

Even if you’ve been out of the hunt for a while, you shouldn’t be too discouraged. Now is a great time to start looking. Companies have been hiring and we’re starting to see a shortage of talent in many industries. So, go for it.
