Company Culture Pays Off and it Doesn’t Just Happen

There are temptations to do things like not throw a holiday party to save money or skip the 1-1 meetings because you’re caught up in client work, but these things can harm your office. Workers become detached from their purpose. They lose sight of how their work relates to the greater good. It’s gradual and therefore hard to detect. When a company’s culture is degrading, the processes are probably still moving along, but the things that make you better than your competitors slowly dissolves. So how can this be avoided?

Hire for Fit.

Get people who you think will share interests and passions with your team. Don’t draft the superstar who you don’t think will fit in well.

Make Sure Your Recruiter Really Knows What You’re About.

You should use a recruiter who’s curious about your culture and what makes your office different. Work towards a longer relationship, let them sit in on a team meeting. Most recruiters would love to be a part of something like this. Make your culture known. Celebrate it.

Ambassadors.

Hopefully people at your company have used social media to talk about the work environment. This information is more valuable, more believable to candidates.

It’s not Just Ping Pong and Free Coffee.

Perks are great and they can really pay off, but they’re just the opener. They’re things candidates can talk about with their friends when they’re deciding where they want to work, but if the perk doesn’t underscore the idea that the employees seem to really want to be at work then it backfires, and the perk gets mentioned with irony.

Companies with good cultures are going to generate better work and therefore be able to hire better workers. The benefits are compounding, and who doesn’t want to work at a place where people are generally glad to be there? This stuff doesn’t just happen magically. It really has to become a priority.
